What to Expect

A child can be professionally diagnosed with dyslexia as early as 5 ½ years old. Waiting to see if your child will outgrow his or her difficulties is not supported by research. In fact, the longer you wait the longer and more difficult the remediation will be.

The first step is to contact one of our Dyslexia Testing Specialists. A short telephone interview will then be conducted. If there appears to be reason to proceed with testing, an in-depth interview will be scheduled.

During this interview, we will gather genetic, developmental and educational history on your child. Information will be taken both on your child's areas of struggles and strengths. Children with dyslexia have significant strengths as well as educational difficulties. This information will help the testing specialist determine if there are adequate signs of dyslexia to proceed with the testing.

Testing is generally performed over two or more days. Specific tests used are determined from the interview information. The following areas may be examined:

  • General Intelligence
  • Memory
  • Auditory Processing
  • Phonics
  • Decoding
  • Reading Fluency
  • Reading Comrehension
  • Dysgraphia
  • Writing
  • Near and far point copying

At the conclusion of the testing, a report will be prepared. This report will give a complete diagnosis of your child's reading difficulties. Accommodations for schoolwork, homework and testing will be given. You will also receive recommendations for tutoring. A meeting will be held to present this report and answer any questions you may have.
