Letter From A Parent
Words can not describe the immense gratitude that I have for all the
support my family has received from ALLC. As you may recall, when
Esteban was tested last year he could only recognize and name a few
letters in the alphabet. He was struggling in school and we faced some
disciplinary problems as a result of him trying to divert attention away
from the fact that he could not read. Against my family's advice I
decided to seek help for Esteban. I heard comments such as "he will
catch up because he is a very bright boy or you are overreacting he is
just a late bloomer." I was so excited to find ALLC and after meeting
with you I realized that I was right and that Esteban needed to be
tested. When we reviewed his results I truthfully was a little
overwhelmed by the severity of his dyslexia. I felt like I had not
acted quickly enough to obtain the help he needed.
Less than a year later, I am just speechless and my eyes swell with tears every time I hear him read. Esteban seeks every opportunity to read whether it is the ingredients listed on the juice he is drinking or signs as we drive around the city. The days of my husband and I speaking in code such as spelling each word out so Esteban doesn't decode our message have ended. He exudes confidence and does not shy away from the opportunity to read. I cringed when he was asked to read a paragraph at his Cub Scout meeting. I found myself trying to protect him. He stood there as confident as can be. Although he struggled, with some help he was able to finish reading his paragraph. A few weekends ago while shopping Esteban stood in the card aisle and began to read the cards out loud. He was so intent reading cards out loud that a woman next to us commented what a good reader he was. I couldn't help but smile and think, "Yes, my son can read!" - Liza K.
